I managed the third ascent on Saturday after a bit of work, and I think this is an awesome new problem. Jaeger made an impressive repeat as well, and this is probably his hardest send.

He called it I Comb My Hair Like God and wrote on his blog, “… I Come My hair Like God V12(maybe). I’m not sure about the grade. My gut tells me v11 but I don’t want to be a sandbagger.” When we first started trying the project the weather was warm and it took a while to figure out the moves. Phil, who has been on a tear lately, failed and then came back and failed to send the problem again. I went to the Black Hills last weekend and Phil made the FA, and I am psyched he went up there and did it. I thought for sure that it was V12 and encouraged him to call him that. After climbing this, however, I would put it on the upper end of V11. I should have listened to Phil! Either way, it’s an awesome new problem, just another to add to the long list of great power problems in the Park. This may have been the last day in the high country, as the report from Carlo Traversi, who hiked to Jade on Monday was a ton of snow in Chaos. I imagine Evans was similar.

I did no climbing, but just hiked up on the ridge (the shoulder of Otis Peak) and looked down upon the snow-dusted boulders gathered in Chaos Canyon. It was cloudy and cold but it was awesome to get out and I took some pictures wanted to share. Days like today remind me of the enjoyment I get from hiking, exploring and having adventures in the mountains.

img_5968The majestic Hallet’s Peak towers over Tyndall Gorge

Emerald Lake is a small area, but there are some classic testpieces. The south side of the drainage is home to Whispers of Wisdom, The Kind Traverse and The Kind. The north side has one boulder with several problems. Large and Real Large are the best, but there is also Tommy’s Arete, which climbs a nice overhanging prow, Hi Fi V10, which climbs the obvious seam to the right of Real Large, and Conquest V12, which starts to the right of the Larges as well, but climbs high from some crimpy underclings to a hard match.

This was my first trip to the Park this year, and I have conservatively estimated that I have bouldered in RMNP over 400 days. I was exhausted from all the climbing on Saturday. I climbed only one boulder, the classic V9 Real Large. Here is Ryan Olson making a quick send.
