ABS Nationals 2011

Posted on 03. Feb, 2011 by in News

It’s been cold and miserable here in Colorado last week and it is that time of year again. As most of the country is ensconced in wintery weather, the strongest women and men have been training hard for the upcoming ABS Nationals, here in Boulder, CO. Just a few blocks away from my place of employment, Movement Climbing and Fitness, is a dark warehouse where preparations are being made for this years event. I have been asked once again to set for the event, and this is the 8th year I have helped. This is one of the biggest bouldering competitions in America. I went over to scope out the wall and it looks impressive to say the least!

Here are some bullet points from Jason Danforth, who is helping to coordinate the event:
· For the first time ever ABS Nationals won’t be held in a climbing gym
· The live broadcast times are Semi-Finals, 10am MST 2/12, Finals 7:45pm MST 2/12
· 3 brand new walls from Vertical Solutions (OMG…)

· www.absnationals.org for tickets, www.ubcprotour.com for the broadcast

Time to get psyched!!!!

So… The competition is being held in said warehouse? How does spectating work? and what happens to the walls after the comp?

Yes. I am not sure yet if there will be bleachers, chairs or people will stand. This is a much better system than we’ve had in the past, as far more people can fit into the building than say The Spot, where it has been held previously. I;m not sure what happens to the walls.

    How tall are those walls?

About 22 feet tall. Obviously they won’t be setting all the way to the top but I’m sure it will still be pretty intense…

Who made the walls? Are they event walls (meaning: can they be picked up and taken to other locations even if it doesn’t have scaffold ceilings?

The walls are Vertical Solutions (www.verticalsolns.com). The Daily Camera article says they’re portable, and it sounds like these are the new Unified Bouldering Championships walls, so I assume they’ll be used for SLC and the Nor’easter.

This would be my first time ever coming to this type of competition. A student of mine suggested it and I would like to go. My little girl just got into climbing and it is more to get her excited. I am searching for the address, but all I can find is that it is a warehouse. Can anyone help me? Also is there an entry fee?

it looks like they actually did though, right?

and is what sean mcoll saying about magnus getting unfairly dropped from the finals true?

Hope they keep it a bunch lower for my little kiddos this weekend! that’s a really long way down for a 9 yo.

I heard they would be though as I’m sure they took that into consideration.

Wall heights for the adults were perfect, as evident by the massive whips from problem 2 to the deck! And how about Sock Johnson’s massive dyno on problem #3 that took him to the edge of the mats? Damn guys, well set…
