New Boulders

I had a few days off over Thanksgiving, and I decided to hang around the Front Range. During the summer it is easy to direct focus on either Mt. Evans or RMNP, but the winter season provides a more complex challenge. More and more the elaborate process of finding, cleaning, and figuring out completely new beta on unclimbed boulders seems to hold an attraction. With the weather threatening in the high country, I went to Arthur’s Rock, in Lory State Park to check out some new problems and hopefully find some projects. Adding to the my interest is a new guide to the area, put out by Ben Scott and the NCCC, and my good friend Brian Camp‘s new problem Triton V12.

Nice to see the uncut footage of the first ascent. Well done.
I went to Arthur’s Rock for two days last week. The first of which I made the second ascent of Triton, with Camp feeding me perfect beta. This is a great 7 move power problem. It’s hard to believe there are still problems as good as this that have been unclimbed in the Front Range of Colorado. A great addition and one of the hardest in the Fort Collins area.

Afterwards, I walked up the hill and climbed Bearhug, which climbs the somewhat obvious prow left of the classic dihedral The Vice. This is given V9 in the guidebook, but it seemed to be much harder, and I would suggest low end V11. Regardless, it was a very nice and tricky problem.
Camp and I have been on the hunt for new problems and we scoped several potential lines. I also did the FA of The Gremlin Project, which turned out to be far less difficult and far less interesting than I had hoped it to be. This is the low roof below Childbirth and it is somewhere in the V9 range. I think there could be a few more hard problems to add at Arthur’s, as well as the Poudre Canyon, where I bouldered a few days last week as well. More to come…
